Through the Dana Brevini® brand, Dana’s UK marine engineering team have worked closely with Caley Ocean Systems on a range of marine and subsea contracts, over many years. This latest project sees Dana specifying and supplying gearboxes and slew bearings as part of an innovative Submarine Rescue System, the first of which is due to be delivered to the Indian Navy this month.
Certified to operate in Sea State 6 – some of the harshest sea conditions – this new 3rd Generation Submarine Rescue System from JFD includes a Launch and Recovery System (LARS) from Caley Ocean Systems, as part of a system designed for the fast rescue of submariners in distress, and capable of being mobilised in less than 24 hours.
Given the environment and the circumstances in which the rescue system will be deployed, reliability and capability were significant factors in Caley choosing Dana to work with them on this system, continuing their longstanding relationship with Dana Brevini in the UK.
For the LARS main winch, and working in close collaboration with Caley’s team, Dana’s integrated approach – providing solutions as well as products – enabled their engineers to identify the optimum gearing and number of drives for the system, and to specify and supply products based on proven technology from across the comprehensive Dana Brevini® range. The Caley LARS winch uses an internally geared slewing bearing (supplied by Dana from partner company, La Leonessa) driven by 4 industrial series planetary gearboxes (from the Dana Brevini® Motion Systems range). To meet the system’s certification requirements, Dana supplied gearing calculations as part of the project, as well as material certificates.
Commenting on the project, Richard Haskey, Business Development Manager for Mobile & Marine Applications at Dana Inc, said,
“We were delighted to be selected by Caley to work with them on this project – innovative as well as critical for submariners’ safety. Dana Brevini has always been a respected name in the UK marine sector and, with Dana growing the Dana Brevini name, we can offer even more benefits to our customers. In the case of this Launch and Rescue System, having one company who can supply the slewing bearings as well as the gearboxes, dealing with just one company, saves time, reduces risk, and makes everything easier – both for supply and for ongoing maintenance and servicing. We look forward to further developing our relationship with Caley.”
